At 12:02 PM, firefighters in Division 3 were dispatched to 242 Midland Ave (The Midland Arms) for a working fire with a person trapped. Engine 34 was first to arrive on scene at 12:04 PM. Firefighters from Engine 34 quickly deployed an attack hose to attack the flames, which were reported in the basement of the building. Truck 83 arrived at 12:05 PM and began a search of the building for the trapped occupant. As firefighters were attempting to make their way up the building to the second floor, where the trapped occupant was reported, they encountered heavy smoke and heat. Firefighters quickly realized that the fire had extended into the walls of the building and was quickly spreading up to the attic space. At this time, Deputy 3 requested a 2nd Alarm to the scene.
The trapped occupant was able to locate a window on the "D" side and signal for help. Firefighters from Truck 23 were able to extend a ground ladder up and assist the occupant to safety. Multiple hoses were stretched and operated both inside and outside the building. As conditions continued to deteriorate, a 3rd Alarm was requested to the scene. Firefighters battled the blaze for 2 hours and 34 minutes. At 2:36 PM, Deputy 3 declared the fire under control and an extensive overhaul began. Flames had extended up from the basement to the attic space. Every apartment in the building suffered either heat, fire or water damage. Midland's Building Department responded to the scene and declared the building uninhabitable. There were no injuries to any occupants or firefighters. Three cats were killed unfortunately. A total of 61 firefighters operated at the scene. At 4:12 PM, all FDLC units were clear from the scene. Firefighters from Engine 59 quickly deployed a attack hose to start knocking down the flames, as Truck 37 began ventilation and attempting to enter the home to conduct a primary search.
