2/19 PASSAIC ST 5TH ALARM (LIBERTY PARK)
At 12:15 AM, firefighters were dispatched to 519 Passaic St in Liberty Park for a working fire. Engine 54 arrived on scene first and reported heavy smoke pushing from the building, and flames on the second floor. Residents were reporting to Engine 54 that there were still people inside the building. Truck 83 arrived soon after and immediately rushed to the second floor to begin a search. After Engine 54's Captain updated responding units about possible trapped occupants, Deputy Chief Marcland transmitted a 2nd Alarm to the scene and a 3rd Alarm to stage at Station 54. Truck 83's crew reported heavy smoke and heat in the hallway on the second floor. Firefighters were unable to push up to the third floor of the building to reach anyone above the fire floor. Truck 57 arrived as the second due truck, and began setting up ground ladders to the third floor and to vent the roof in an attempt to get the trapped heat and smoke in the stairwell out. An aggressive interior attack by Engines 54 and 83 were made using multiple hoses, but flames flashed quickly and conditions quickly deteriorated. Fire would extend up to the third floor and firefighters would have to use master streams in an attempt to knock down the flames through the windows. The 3rd Alarm units would be brought in, and a 4th Alarm would be split with some units sent directly to the scene, while others staged. Conditions would worsen and firefighters would be forced to evacuate. Soon after the evacuation tones were sounded, the roof of the building collapsed. Heavy fire would vent up into the sky and threaten to spread to neighboring buildings. All of the 4th Alarm units and a 5th Alarm would be brought to the scene as firefighters began setting up multiple aerials and master streams in an attempt to save the whole block from becoming engulfed. The temperature at the time of this fire would be 30 degrees and a wind chill at 14 degrees. Multiple rehab units would be sent to the scene to assist with keeping firefighters warm and away from the elements for periods of time. Firefighters from Truck 83 would be able to rescue 2 trapped occupants, however 7 other residents would not be able to escape. It would be determined that the door of the apartment where the fire originated was left open as the occupants left. This would allow fresh air to feed the fire and spread out into the hallway. The building did not have a working fire alarm at the time and was not built with sprinklers. Firefighters would be on scene all through the evening until 11:30 AM. The County Arson Investigation Team would respond and investigate the cause. It would be determined to be a faulty space heater.
